Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken, Making History in the NHL

The Seattle Kraken have made a landmark appointment by bringing Jessica Campbell onto their coaching staff. This historic move marks Campbell as the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the NHL's storied history.

Campbell’s credentials are impressive and establish her as a trailblazer in the world of professional hockey. Having served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, she has continually broken barriers in a male-dominated field. During the 2014-15 season, she was also the team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game, an early indicator of her leadership skills and on-ice prowess.

Breaking New Ground

In 2022, Campbell made another significant breakthrough by becoming the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL). She managed the Firebirds' power play and played a crucial role in the development of AHL star Tye Kartye. Under her guidance, Kartye clinched the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. His season stats boasted 20 points, with 11 goals and nine assists over 77 games with the Kraken.

Campbell's achievements speak volumes about her commitment and ability to develop players. Kraken coach Dan Bylsma noted her connection with players as a significant factor in her hire. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma remarked.

A Diverse Coaching Portfolio

Not limited to North American hockey, Campbell's influence reached international levels when she coached the men's national team for Team Germany during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship. This accomplishment made her the first woman to coach a men's national team in the tournament's history. Additionally, she has served in coaching roles with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers and worked with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer during the same IIHF championship.

Besides her coaching duties, Campbell has honed the skills of countless athletes, acting as a power-skating coach for notable players such as Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. Her work in this specialized area of development is likely a key component that the Kraken hopes to leverage, especially in managing their power play.

Assessment of Her Role

The Kraken expect Campbell to head their power-play unit, bringing her specialized skills and experience to the forefront. Her coaching accolades and ability to connect with players on an individual level will undoubtedly play a critical role in Seattle's strategy moving forward. Tye Kartye's breakout season stands as a testament to her impact, and the Kraken are optimistic she will continue to nurture talent at the highest level.

Speaking on her appointment, Campbell exuded humility and a focused work ethic. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” she shared.

Looking Ahead

Campbell’s journey reflects a philosophy of dedication to growth and improvement. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal,” she added, embodying the relentless drive required to succeed in professional sports.

“I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” Campbell emphasized, showcasing her long-term vision and commitment to excellence.

The Seattle Kraken have also bolstered their roster by signing 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour, signaling their intent to compete at the highest levels. With Campbell’s appointment and their recent roster enhancements, the Kraken are positioning themselves as a formidable force in the league.

As the NHL continues to evolve, Campbell's appointment is a monumental step forward, reflecting broader changes within the sport. Her achievements underscore the importance of diverse perspectives in coaching, and she stands as an inspiring figure for aspiring coaches everywhere.
