2023 has undoubtedly been a pivotal year for Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland, marked by a series of professional highs and lows that have solidified his presence in the competitive arena of golf.
FedEx Cup Triumph
The pinnacle of Hovland's 2023 season came when he clinched the coveted FedEx Cup Playoffs title. His road to victory was nothing short of spectacular, as he delivered three consecutive under-par rounds at the St. Jude Championship and achieved a dazzling final-round 61 at the BMW Championship outside Chicago. This triumphant streak continued as he went on to secure the Tour Championship in Atlanta, concluding his postseason with a remarkable scoring average of 66.17.
Resilience at the Ryder Cup
Beyond the FedEx Cup, Hovland displayed an electrifying performance at the Ryder Cup in the fall. This not only highlighted his tenacity but also underscored his ability to rise to the occasion on one of golf's biggest stages. His consistent showcasing of skill and resilience throughout these tournaments provided a glimpse into his potential for future greatness.
Challenges and Adversities
However, Hovland's journey in 2023 wasn't without its hurdles. Entering the St. Jude Championship, he was ranked 57th in the FedEx Cup standings. His game faced significant challenges, notably his strokes gained approach numbers, which fell to +0.46 per round. Even more concerning was his ranking of 175th out of 176 players on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green—a stark contrast for a player of his caliber.
Despite these difficulties, including having just one top-10 finish in the season and the worst total strokes gained output of his career, Hovland's determination to improve remained unwavering.
Reflecting on Technique and Strategy
Hovland has been open about his struggles and the changes he attempted to bring to his game. He explained, "The things that I did in my swing that made me good, that made me able to predict a certain ball flight, I went home and tried to do a certain move—not necessarily because I had in mind that I wanted to change my pattern. I knew my pattern was really good, but I was upset that I wasn't cutting the ball as much as I would have liked."
During the offseason, Hovland made a conscious effort to alter his swing to cut the ball more, but this adjustment proved challenging. "When I did that, I ruined a relationship that happens in my swing that makes it really difficult for me to control the face coming down," he revealed. Despite this setback, he remains analytical and optimistic about understanding and correcting his technique, stating, "I know exactly why it happened. I know exactly what happens because I've gotten myself measured, and now it's just kind of a process of getting back to where I was."
The Psychological Battle
For Hovland, the mental aspect of the game has been equally daunting. "It's just not that fun to play golf when you don't know where the ball is going," he admitted. "I can try to grind my hardest. I can try to chip in from there. But you do that too often, too many times during the course of a round or a tournament, [and] it's too much to overcome. I feel like it's a waste of time for me to be playing golf if that's where I'm at; I'd rather be off the golf course and work on it, trying to figure out why I'm doing those things."
This acknowledgment of the psychological toll makes his achievements even more commendable. Hovland emphasizes the importance of feeling confident and being on a path to progress. "One thing is playing bad, but you don't know why and you don't know how to fix it. That's very challenging mentally. But at least now we're... I might play terrible this week, but at least I feel like I'm on a path to improvement, and that's all that kind of matters for me."
A Year of Growth
Ultimately, Viktor Hovland's 2023 season has been characterized by a blend of remarkable triumphs and considerable challenges. His journey highlights the relentless pursuit of excellence in professional sports, where every victory is hard-earned, and every setback is an opportunity for growth. As he continues to refine his game and build on the lessons learned this year, the golfing world will undoubtedly be watching closely as he strives for even greater heights in the seasons to come.
