Mike Westhoff Takes a Step Back for Health Reasons
Denver Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff has announced he is temporarily stepping back from coaching responsibilities, citing health concerns as the primary driver behind this decision. At 76 years old, Westhoff has encountered recent vision issues that necessitated further medical evaluations. While it was not an easy decision, Westhoff recognized the importance of prioritizing his health. "It's not easy to make this decision, but this was a wake-up call that I needed to put my health first," he stated.
A Storied Coaching Career
Westhoff's remarkable career in the National Football League (NFL) began over four decades ago, in 1982, serving initially as an offensive line and tight ends coach. However, he eventually found his niche as one of the most respected special teams coaches in the league. His extensive journey spanned 33 seasons, a tenure few can match, which saw him traveling along the Eastern Seaboard of NFL teams. He made significant impacts coaching with the Indianapolis Colts from 1982 to 1984 before embarking on a 15-season stint with the Miami Dolphins from 1986 to 2000.
Westhoff's reputation continued to flourish during his tenure with the New York Jets from 2001 to 2012. During this period, he became a familiar face to many fans when he appeared on HBO's "Hard Knocks" in 2010, offering a closer look at his coaching style and leadership during the team’s training camp. He later had a brief coaching role with the New Orleans Saints for the 2018 season.
Throughout his illustrious career, Westhoff garnered admiration and respect from peers and players alike. Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan referred to Westhoff as both a mentor and an 'older brother,' underscoring the deep personal relationships he cultivated within the league. In turn, Westhoff humorously commented, "Gee, thanks. I'm not old. I think he looks older than me."
Health and Perseverance
A cancer survivor, Westhoff has faced health battles with resilience and determination. His decision to temporarily step away is a testament to his understanding of personal well-being, even as his passion for the game remains undiminished. In his current role with the Denver Broncos, Westhoff has been collaborating with Ben Kotwica to oversee the team’s special teams unit. The duo had previously worked together on the New York Jets staff from 2009 to 2012, rekindling a familiar and effective partnership in Denver.
The Broncos' Current Standings
For the Broncos, Westhoff's absence is certainly felt, particularly as the team navigates a critical juncture of their season. Currently holding a 5-5 record, Denver has experienced the sting of two consecutive losses leading up to their matchup against a 6-4 Atlanta. Yet, despite recent setbacks, the Broncos remain in contention, occupying the seventh and final playoff spot in their conference. The continuation of the season remains pivotal for the franchise, requiring adaptability and resilience both on and off the field.
Mike Westhoff's contribution to the Denver Broncos and the NFL remains undeniable, his influence extending beyond mere statistics and accolades. As he prioritizes his health, his legacy within professional football endures, inspiring current and future generations of coaches and players. While he steps back to focus on personal matters, the hope is that Westhoff will see a full recovery and potentially a return to the passion and mentorship that have defined his life for more than a generation.
