Training Camp Challenges and Growth
Mekhi Becton's preseason journey with the Philadelphia Eagles began with notable challenges. Initially, Becton struggled to find his footing during training camp, especially in matchups against the formidable Jalen Carter. However, Becton's persistence and dedication paid off as he steadily improved, balancing his encounters more evenly with Carter as the camp proceeded.
"It's been fun. We had a little back and forth today. We went against each other and you know I'm starting to catch up to him. I'm starting to get his number. We're starting to get each others' numbers. We working. Iron sharpens iron," Becton commented, highlighting the competitive spirit that fueled his progress.
Emerging as a Frontrunner
Becton's hard work did not go unnoticed. As the Eagles prepared for Week 1 of the season, he emerged as the frontrunner for the starting position at right guard. This notable development marks a significant milestone in his career and signifies his adaptability and hard-earned growth.
Becton showcased his preparedness during the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. He was the only first-team starter on the offense to take the field, playing a total of eight snaps before Tyler Steen took over. This performance was particularly significant for Becton, as it marked his first time playing right guard in a live game.
"There's always room for improvement on anything. This was the first time I ever played right guard in a live game. Of course, I'm gonna look at the film with Stout [Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland] and figure out what we need to do. We'll come together and combine it," Becton noted, emphasizing his commitment to continuous improvement through film study and coaching feedback.
Support from Teammates and Coaches
Becton's transition to right guard has been supported by valuable advice from his teammates and the guidance of the coaching staff. Cam Jurgens, who has provided insight on the position's nuances, stated, "A lot of it's talking about angles and where I want him to be and just how different every D-lineman plays. You're going to have two gappers, penetrators, different guys play different techniques, so figuring out how the footwork changes from each defensive guy and where that linebacker is and if we have certain motions where it may change our footwork."
Landon Dickerson also acknowledged Becton's rapid adjustment to the position. He mentioned, "A little bit of an adjustment for him, but the way he's built, the way he can move with his long arms, his reach, his lateral quickness, I think right now he's really excelling at that position. And it is an adjustment, but he's handling it extremely well." Dickerson further commended Becton's ability to succeed in practice and continually improve, saying, "For him to make that transition and come inside, and the way he's been able to succeed in doing well in practice, and come out here every day and keep getting better, is impressive."
Such endorsements from teammates underscore the respect Becton has garnered for his work ethic and the swift adaptability he's demonstrated in his new role.
Focus on Fundamentals
Becton attributed much of his progress to a focus on fundamental skills such as footwork and hand placement, critical components in mastering the right guard position. "It's still O-line at the end of the day. I still gotta get my hands. I still gotta do my footwork. It's just all about attacking my footwork and I did attack it," he explained. This diligent approach to refining the basics has been instrumental in Becton's development and success.
Looking Forward
As the NFL season approaches, Becton's improvement and adaptability will be crucial for the Eagles' offensive line. His journey from training camp struggles to becoming a prominent candidate for the starting right guard position reflects his resilience and determination. The support and insights from his teammates and coaches have further enabled Becton to hone his skills and embrace the challenges of his new role.
With continued effort and focus, Mekhi Becton is poised to make a significant impact on the Eagles' offensive line, showcasing the potential that has earned him praise and recognition within the team's ranks.
