From Unexpected Call-Up to Team USA Mainstay: Derrick White's Continuing Journey
As Derrick White stood on the practice courts Sunday, it marked the beginning of another unexpected chapter in his remarkable basketball journey. After arriving at 2:30 a.m. from a long flight, White reflected on his latest twist in fate: stepping in to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard for Team USA.
Just days ago, White was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp. He had intended to enjoy a family vacation in Cabo but swiftly changed plans when the call came. This narrative echoes his experience in 2019, when he was a last-minute addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China. Back then, White secured the final roster spot after higher-profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew from the team.
"It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable," White shared. "I feel [now] like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."
White’s current trajectory has been further fueled by a recent professional milestone. He agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, a testament to his invaluable contributions during the Celtics' season that culminated in an NBA title last month. His defensive versatility and high-impact plays were pivotal in the team's success.
Jayson Tatum, a teammate from both the Celtics and now Team USA, expressed his excitement about White's arrival. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," Tatum noted.
White's reunion on the national team not only includes Tatum but also Celtics teammate Jrue Holiday and former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, who now serves as an assistant coach for Team USA. This familiarity may prove beneficial as White integrates into the squad, tasked with bringing his defensive prowess and adaptability to the international stage.
The landscape for Team USA features changing dynamics, as seen with forward Kevin Durant’s absence from Monday’s exhibition game against Australia due to a rehabilitating strained calf. Coach Steve Kerr shared that Durant did not participate in contact drills but focused on shooting practices and rehab activities.
White’s presence provides a much-needed boost to Team USA. His championship experience and defensive expertise make him a valuable asset, particularly in the absence of key players like Durant. White’s journey from the Select Team to a central figure on the national team underscores his growth and resilience as an athlete.
As Derrick White embarks on this new chapter, his story serves as an inspiring narrative of perseverance, adaptability, and unrelenting dedication. Whether it's stepping up at the last minute or anchoring defensive plays, White continues to shape his legacy in ways even he might not have anticipated.
