Oneil Cruz Shifts from Shortstop to Center Field
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced a significant positional change for one of their most promising players, Oneil Cruz. Cruz, who has primarily been stationed at shortstop, will be transitioning to center field. This decision was confirmed by Pirates manager Derek Shelton.
At 25 years old, Cruz’s move comes as a surprise to many, especially considering his limited experience in the outfield. To date, Cruz has never played center field at any level of professional baseball. His only brief stints in the outfield include 80 innings in left field in Triple-A and a single inning in left field in the majors. Despite this, the Pirates are confident in Cruz's ability to adapt to his new role.
"Cruz will remain a center fielder for the foreseeable future," Shelton stated, reinforcing the permanence of this change. The decision to shift him to center field is largely influenced by his athleticism and powerful arm—qualities that can be maximized in this new position. His mixed record at shortstop, marked by statistical inconsistencies, played a role in the strategic move. This season alone, Cruz has made 24 errors, half of which have occurred since July 21, raising questions about his suitability for the infield role.
Cruz’s transition is also seen as a response to his previous injury woes. In April of 2022, he suffered a broken leg during a home plate collision with Seby Zavala, which dramatically cut short his season. "Cruz's season-ending injury last season was a factor in the decision," Shelton pointed out, indicating that the move is also part of long-term considerations for Cruz’s health and sustainability on the field.
A New Role Amidst a Challenging Season
This shift comes during a turbulent period for the Pirates. As of late August, Cruz was primarily featured in the lineup as a designated hitter, but the team has experienced significant struggles. Having nearly fallen out of the playoff race, the Pirates recently endured a 10-game losing streak, although they have managed to win four of their last six games. This backdrop of instability likely contributed to the decision to experiment with Cruz's placement on the field.
Beyond his defensive reassignment, Cruz has continued to make his mark offensively. This season, he boasts a hitting line of .265/.324/.468 and a 120 OPS+, accompanied by impressive stats: 29 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 63 RBIs, 57 runs, and 17 steals. His overall contributions account for a 2.5 WAR, underscoring his value to the team.
Meanwhile, the Pirates have had to grapple with other injury concerns, notably to Nick Gonzales, who suffered a groin injury in late July. Cruz's positional switch might partially align with managing the roster under these challenging circumstances.
