Astros Face Remainder of Season Without McCullers
The Houston Astros are bracing for the rest of the regular season without their reliable right-hander, Lance McCullers Jr. The pitcher has encountered setbacks in his recovery from off-season surgery, making his return this year highly improbable.
McCullers, who underwent surgery last summer to repair a flexor tendon in his throwing arm and remove a bone spur, has not advanced to the point of beginning a rehab assignment. A significant setback in early July further dampened hopes of an early return. Joe Espada, the Astros' bench coach, confirmed, "The Houston Astros will likely be without right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. for the remainder of the regular season."
Since debuting in the major leagues in 2015, McCullers has been a key fixture for the Astros, making 130 appearances and maintaining a commendable 3.48 ERA (118 ERA+) with a 2.70 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Despite his contributions, McCullers has struggled with injuries throughout his career, surpassing the 150-inning mark only once during the 2021 season. His next highest inning total was 128 in the 2018 season.
McCullers has had moments of glory, having pitched in two World Series victories. One of his notable achievements includes starting Game 7 of the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Recognizing his talent despite his injury history, the Astros extended his contract before the 2021 season with a five-year, $85 million deal, keeping him under contract through the 2026 campaign. He is owed $34 million over the next two seasons.
In light of McCullers' absence, the Astros have taken steps to bolster their pitching staff. They executed a deadline deal to acquire left-hander Yusei Kikuchi. Additionally, the team has been closely monitoring the recovery of veteran pitcher Justin Verlander. Verlander, who recently participated in a simulated game, is projected to carry out a couple of minor-league rehab assignments before rejoining the Astros sometime in the middle of the month.
Verlander's return could provide a much-needed boost to the Astros’ rotation. His experience and skill on the mound will be crucial as the team navigates the final stretch of the regular season and prepares for potential postseason play.
The absence of McCullers, combined with the temporary sidelining of Verlander, has undeniably tested the depth of the Astros' pitching roster. However, the team's proactive approach in acquiring Kikuchi and ensuring Verlander's readiness underscores their resilience and commitment to maintaining a competitive edge.
Astros fans will no doubt miss seeing McCullers on the mound this season, but his contributions to the team over the years have been significant. As he continues his recovery, the team will rally around their remaining pitchers and the coaching staff will work diligently to navigate these challenges.
As the Astros push forward, they will lean on their experienced coaching staff, including bench coach Joe Espada, and the emerging talents within their roster. The remainder of the season will be a test of their depth and determination, but with strategic moves and a focus on recovery, the Astros are poised to stay competitive.
